This past February, Chris applied for a lateral transfer. Basically, its a career change but within the military. While he was deployed he would send me big emails. Not the one or two liners that I get every day but huge pages of stuff he was reading. A lot of it was Africa based. We had discussed that working over there might be something that we do post military. But then one day I google Foreign Area Officer, which was the beginning of a whole new path. I waited until he was home for a week and mentioned the idea. He had always told me it was the coolest job, when we would hear about someone who had transferred, but was nervous about the language test. He took the language test (he did awesome on), all four of us got overseas screened (which is a lot of work), and he submitted his application! The board met in June and we’ve been waiting the results.
About a week and a half ago the results came out and Chris made it! Not only did he make it, but he got AFRICA! The area of the world that we’ve been talking about so much. I feel like I need to pinch myself to see if its really true. We are really, over the moon excited about all of this. Our life is about to change so much, as we will now spend the majority of his 10-20 years left in the military overseas. Our first tour is going to be in West Africa, penciled in for Dakar, Senegal. I’ve already been on Pinterest, keeping a little list of all the things I want to see, along with some of the things that are new to me that I need to know living in Africa. The kids school, how to mail from the US, what are some of the things you can’t get over there, etc.
This next 6-9 months we will be in Monterey, CA where Chris will learn French and then take classes on life as a Foreign Area Officer. He and I will learn a lot that I feel kinda clueless about right now. I seriously can’t wait, and neither can he. It feels like everything is coming at us so quickly right now, and we’ve had a lot of (fast) decisions to make. While that is stressful, we are so excited about our new adventure. Yes, so excited!!
We are indeed very blessed.
